Biography
About Belinda Bencic
Swiss tennis player Belinda Bencic was born on 10 March 1997 in Flawil, Switzerland. She began playing tennis at age two, and her father arranged for her to train daily with Martina Hingis's mother and coach, Melanie Molitor, from age seven. By 16, she was the top-ranked junior in the world and had won junior Grand Slam titles at the French Open and Wimbledon. She turned professional in 2012 and made her top 100 debut shortly after turning 17. In 2014, she reached the US Open quarterfinals, becoming the youngest player to do so since Hingis in 1997.
Bencic won her first two WTA Tour titles in 2015, including the Canadian Open, where she defeated four of the top six players in the world. The following year, she made her top-ten debut while still 18. From 2016 through 2018, she faced injury challenges, including wrist surgery in 2017 that kept her out for five months and dropped her ranking outside the top 300. She bounced back within a year, rising back into the top 50. In 2019, she had her best season: she won the Dubai Championships, reached her first Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open, qualified for her first WTA Finals, and finished the year in the top 10. That performance earned her the WTA Comeback Player of the Year award.
Bencic has won five career singles titles, including a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and two doubles titles on the WTA Tour. She reached a career-high ranking of No. 4 in February 2020. Standing 5'9" with an athletic build, she is 29 years old and has brown hair and brown eyes. She is straight and of Caucasian ethnicity.
