Biography

About Martina Hingis

Edited by the community

Martina Hingis, born on 30 September 1980 in Košice, Slovakia, spent a total of 209 weeks as the world No. 1 in singles and 90 weeks as the world No. 1 in doubles. She is Swiss, a former professional tennis player, and one of the most decorated athletes of her era. Hingis won five Grand Slam singles titles, thirteen Grand Slam women's doubles titles, including a calendar-year Grand Slam in 1998, and seven Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. She also won the WTA Finals twice in singles and three times in doubles, took an Olympic silver medal, and set a record with seventeen Tier I singles titles.

During the 1990s, Hingis set a series of youngest-ever records, including becoming the youngest Grand Slam champion and the youngest world No. 1. She was only 22 when ligament injuries in both ankles forced her to temporarily step away from tennis in 2003, by which time she had already claimed 40 singles and 36 doubles titles. According to Forbes, she was the highest-paid female athlete in the world for five straight years, from 1997 to 2001. After several surgeries and a slow recovery, she returned to the tour in 2006, climbing back to world No. 6, winning two Tier I events, and earning the Laureus World Sports Award for Comeback of the Year. That era featured powerful opponents over 5'10" such as Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, and Lindsay Davenport, and Hingis often had to play nearly perfect tennis to compete.

Hingis retired for the first time in November 2007 after months of hip trouble and a positive test for a cocaine metabolite at that year's Wimbledon Championships, which led to a two-year suspension. She always denied using cocaine. In 2013, she came back as a doubles specialist and retired for good in 2017, closing the book on a 23-year career. Today she is an influencer with 337k Instagram followers, but her legacy in tennis remains firmly intact. She has an athletic build, stands 5'7", and carries natural measurements of 34-26-35, with a 34B bra size.
