About Grace Jones

Edited by the community

Grace Jones is an actress, model, and musician who has defied easy categorization for over five decades. The Jamaican-born performer began her career in modeling, moving from New York state to Paris, where she worked for fashion houses like Yves St. Laurent and Kenzo, and appeared on the covers of Elle and Vogue. Her distinctive androgynous look and bold features made her a favorite of photographers including Jean-Paul Goude, Helmut Newton, and Guy Bourdin. Her measurements are 36–25–35, and she stands 5'10", with a natural 36B bust. She is an athletic Black woman with black hair and brown eyes.

In 1977, Jones turned to music, signing with Island Records and becoming a fixture in New York City's Studio 54 disco scene. She later shifted to a new wave style mixing reggae, funk, post-punk, and pop, often working with Sly & Robbie and Jean-Paul Goude. Her Top 40 UK hits include "Private Life," "Pull Up to the Bumper," "I've Seen That Face Before," and "Slave to the Rhythm." In 1982, the video collection A One Man Show earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Video Album. Her albums Warm Leatherette, Nightclubbing, and Slave to the Rhythm are among her most popular.

As an actress, Jones appeared in the fantasy-action film Conan the Destroyer (1984) with Arnold Schwarzenegger, then played May Day in the James Bond movie A View to a Kill (1985). She starred as a vampire in Vamp (1986) and later acted in Boomerang (1992) with Eddie Murphy. For her roles in Conan the Destroyer, A View to a Kill, and Vamp, she received Saturn Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared in Wolf Girl (2001) with Tim Curry. In 1999, VH1 ranked her 82nd on its list of 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll, and in 2008 she received a Q Idol Award. She has been cited as an inspiration for artists such as Annie Lennox, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Nile Rodgers. In 2016, Billboard ranked her the 40th greatest dance club artist of all time. She has an Instagram following of 483k fans and is listed among the James Bond Girls.
