Divya's entry into entertainment was unconventional. She once sneaked into a local radio station in Ranchi and convinced the manager she was scheduled to read her poetry live. Her enthusiasm won him over, and she performed. Soon after, she gave up her dream of becoming a doctor to pursue acting in Indian film and television. Over her career, she has acted in films in several languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telegu, Kanada, Gujarati, Marathi, and her native Bhojpuri.

She has been a vocal critic of the Bhojpuri film industry for its portrayal of Indian women, earning a reputation for speaking about the realities of being a woman in a male-dominated industry and in India generally. In 2009, she took part in an experimental Internet television series called Jai Hindi, which used a late-night talk show format. On it, she played a satirical version of Savita Bhabi, a character adapted from an animated pornographic series. The jokes used double-speak to criticize India's political system and misogynistic culture, attracting criticism that she answered by clarifying the difference between the two Savitas and her own life.

In 2013, she married a Canadian. She continues to take on smaller film roles and appears in television serials in India. With 426k Instagram followers, she remains a notable figure in Indian entertainment.
