Born on 23 April 1983 in Poprad, Slovakia, she turned professional around age 16 and quickly made her mark. Her breakthrough came in 2002 when, ranked outside the top 20, she won the Indian Wells Masters, defeating Martina Hingis in the final and becoming the lowest-ranked player to ever win that tournament. That same year she reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the US Open, finished in the top ten, and helped Slovakia win the Fed Cup. She also won the Hopman Cup in 2005 with a Slovak team. In January 2003 she reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 5, and in 2008 she made the Australian Open semifinals, her best Grand Slam singles result. Over her career she claimed seven WTA singles titles, including a second Indian Wells crown in 2007 and a final victory at the 2015 Thailand Open. Among her notable wins were upsets of defending champion Serena Williams at the 2006 Australian Open and world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki at the 2011 French Open. In June 2013 she became the 37th woman in the Open Era to reach 500 career wins. She retired on 6 July 2017.

Hantuchova also excelled in doubles. She achieved a career-high doubles ranking of world No. 5. In mixed doubles, she completed the career Grand Slam in 2005, becoming only the fifth woman to do so. Her Grand Slam mixed doubles titles came at Wimbledon (2001, with Leoš Friedl), the Australian Open (2002, with Kevin Ullyett), the French Open (2005, with Fabrice Santoro), and the US Open (2005, with Mahesh Bhupathi). She also reached additional Grand Slam finals: mixed doubles at Wimbledon in 2002 and women's doubles finals at the Australian Open in 2002 and 2009, and at the French Open in 2006, partnering with Arantxa Sánchez Vicario and Ai Sugiyama.
