Biography
About Claudia Cardinale
Claudia Cardinale was an Italian and Tunisian actress whose career spanned more than six decades, from 1957 to 2022. She was born in Tunis, La Goulette, Tunisia, in 1938, and passed away in 2025 at the age of 87. Throughout her long career, she appeared in over 175 films, working across Italian and European cinema, and also in Hollywood productions. Known for her beauty and talent, she was celebrated as one of the defining actresses of the 1960s, often grouped with contemporaries like Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida.
Her entry into acting came by chance. In 1957, she won the "Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia" contest, which led her to Italy, where producer Franco Cristaldi became her mentor and later her husband. Her early roles included a part in *Goha* (1958), but she gained recognition with Italian classics such as *Rocco and His Brothers* (1960), *Girl with a Suitcase* (1961), *The Leopard* (1963), and Federico Fellini's *8½* (1963). Her work in Europe caught the attention of Hollywood, and she appeared in films like *Blindfold* (1966), *Lost Command* (1966), and *The Professionals* (1966). One of her most acclaimed roles came in 1968 with Sergio Leone's spaghetti western *Once Upon a Time in the West*, where she played Jill McBain. Despite her success in America, she chose to return to European cinema to avoid typecasting, and she continued to work with Italian directors through the following decades.
In the 1970s and beyond, Cardinale collaborated with director Pasquale Squitieri, her partner from 1974, on films such as *Blood Brothers* (1974) and *Father of the Godfathers* (1978). Her performance in *Claretta* (1984) earned her a Nastro d'Argento Award for Best Actress. She also appeared in Werner Herzog's *Fitzcarraldo* (1982), showing her range. Even in her later years, she remained active, winning Best Actress at the Antalya Golden Orange International Film Festival in 2010 for *Signora Enrica*. Beyond acting, Cardinale was a UNESCO goodwill ambassador for the Defense of Women's Rights from 2000. In 2011, the Los Angeles Times Magazine named her among the 50 most beautiful women in film history. At her passing in 2025, she was remembered as one of the last icons of the Golden Age of European cinema. She was 5 feet 6 inches tall with a slim build, and she had brown hair and brown eyes.
