Biography
About Sophia Loren
Sophia Loren is an Academy Award-winning Italian actress whose career has spanned over seven decades. Born in Rome, Lazio, Italy on September 20, 1934, she grew up in poverty in wartime Pozzuoli, near Naples, with her mother, sister, and extended family. She has often said that this hardship gave her strength and a deep appreciation for her later success. As a teenager, she was considered an ugly duckling until she suddenly blossomed into a beautiful woman, changing her life forever.
At 15, Loren left Rome and within a year began appearing in minor Italian films. In 1951, she and her mother worked as extras in Quo Vadis, giving her an early taste of Hollywood. She also modeled for romantic photo stories under the names Sofia Villani and Sofia Lazzaro, and entered beauty contests, winning several prizes. Her big break came in 1954 when she met director Vittorio De Sica and actor Marcello Mastroianni, starting a collaboration that produced some of her finest work. Throughout her career, she performed in roles that highlighted her voluptuous figure, including rare topless scenes in early European films, but she later chose never to appear nude again, saying it represented 'a lot of nakedness.'
In 1957, she married film producer Carlo Ponti, a marriage that required an annulment and later a remarriage in 1966 after both obtained French citizenship to bypass Italian divorce laws. The couple had two sons, Carlo Ponti Jr. and Edoardo Ponti. Loren remains a legendary figure in cinema, admired for both her beauty and her talent.
