Biography
About Anna Magnani
Italian actress Anna Magnani was born in Rome on 7 March 1908. She began her career in 1928 and appeared on stage and screen for 44 years, until 1972. Known for her explosive acting and earthy, realistic portrayals, she became one of the most celebrated performers in Italian cinema. Magnani was of Middle Eastern ethnicity, had black hair and brown eyes, and stood 5'3" with a slim build. Her only child contracted polio as a toddler and remained disabled, a hardship that shaped her personal life. She was nicknamed "La Lupa" and described by critics as fiery and volcanic. Harold Clurman called her acting "volcanic," and director Roberto Rossellini considered her "the greatest acting genius since Eleonora Duse."
Magnani's breakthrough came with Rome, Open City (1945), directed by Rossellini, a film that helped launch Italian neorealism. She gained international acclaim for her forceful portrayals of working-class women in films like L'Amore (1948), Bellissima (1951), and Mamma Roma (1962). Tennessee Williams wrote The Rose Tattoo (1955) specifically for her, and she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the role. That win made her the first Italian actress, and the first non-English-speaking woman, to receive an Oscar. By 1950, Life magazine had already called her "one of the most impressive actresses since Garbo." She remained active until 1972 and passed away on 26 September 1973, at the age of 65. Her legacy endures as a towering figure in world cinema.
