Biography
About Amanda Beard
Amanda Beard is an American former swimmer and model, a seven-time Olympic medalist with a career that spanned both the pool and the camera. She first made waves at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, where, at just 14, she won gold and two silver medals, becoming the second youngest American swimmer to medal in Olympic history. She became known for clutching her teddy bear, even on the medal stand. Four years later, in Sydney, she added a bronze in the 200m breaststroke. Then came Athens 2004, where she set a world record at the trials and took home gold and two silvers. Beard competed in her fourth consecutive Olympics in 2008, serving as co-captain of the US women's team, though she didn't medal. She came out of retirement in 2010 but missed the 2012 team by finishing fifth at the trials.
Her modeling path ran parallel to her swimming. She appeared in FHM, the 2006 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, and the July 2007 issue of Playboy. A November 2007 GoDaddy commercial featured her in a 'Shock' ad that flashed her medals. In 2008, she posed for a PETA anti-fur campaign, photographed nude but covering her breasts. Later, in 2014, she appeared on Celebrity Wife Swap, trading places with Heidi Montag.
Beard has an athletic build, brown hair, and blue eyes, standing at 5'8". She has a lower back tattoo. While at the University of Arizona, she struggled with bulimia, a battle she documented in her 2012 memoir, In the Water They Can't See You Cry. She also set an American record in the 200m breaststroke in 2003 and won an NCAA title in 2001. Her career, from 1995 to 2012, saw her reach the top of her sport and turn to modeling. She is American, born in Newport Beach, California, in 1981. She's now 44, and her Instagram following sits at 13k.
