About Tori Amos

Edited by the community

At age five, Tori Amos won a full scholarship to the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University, becoming the youngest person ever admitted. She left at eleven when her scholarship was discontinued for what Rolling Stone described as "musical insubordination." Born Myra Ellen Amos on August 22, 1963, in Newton, North Carolina, she is an American musician of Native American heritage.

Amos began her career in 1979 at age fifteen, and in the 1980s she led the short-lived pop group Y Kant Tori Read. Her solo breakthrough came in the early 1990s with songs that often touch on sexuality, feminism, politics, and religion. Her charting singles include "Crucify," "Silent All These Years," "God," "Cornflake Girl," "Caught a Lite Sneeze," "Professional Widow," "Spark," "1000 Oceans," "Flavor," and "A Sorta Fairytale," her most commercially successful U.S. single to date. She has received five MTV VMA nominations and eight Grammy nominations, and won an Echo Klassik award for her classical crossover album Night of Hunters. VH1 listed her at number 71 on its 1999 "100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll."

Amos is a classically trained pianist with a mezzo-soprano vocal range. She stands 5'2", has red hair and green eyes, and a real/natural bust. She has remained active in music for 47 years. Her Instagram following has grown to 276k.
