Biography
About Shirley Anne Field
British actress Shirley Anne Field was born on 27 June 1936 in Forest Gate, Essex, England. She was abandoned as a baby and partly raised in children's homes. During the war she was evacuated to Bolton, where she was fostered by two families. At age six she entered the National Children's Home at Edgworth, then moved to another home in Blackburn, and later to a hostel in London where she trained as a typist. In 1979 she found her real mother and learned she had three half-sisters in America.
Field began her career as a model after a course at the Lucie Clayton School, posing for pin-up magazines to fund her acting studies. She was spotted by an agent who got her uncredited film roles in the 1950s. Her breakthrough came in 1960 with The Entertainer, starring Laurence Olivier. She credited Tony Richardson, the director, for that opportunity. She soon starred in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and Peeping Tom, becoming a major star by age 22. Over her career she appeared in Alfie, My Beautiful Laundrette, and The Damned. She worked opposite Steve McQueen in The War Lover and Yul Brynner in Kings of the Sun. She also turned down a James Bond film and an Elvis Presley movie. Field was active from 1953 to 2014, a span of 61 years.
Her personal life included a marriage to Charles Crichton-Stuart, with whom she had a daughter, Nicola, born in 1969. The couple divorced in 1975. She published her autobiography, A Time for Love, in 1991. Later in life she toured in theatre productions and appeared in the short film Beautiful Relics (2014). Shirley Anne Field died on 10 December 2023 at age 87.
