Biography

About Audrey Hepburn

Edited by the community

Audrey Hepburn was born on 4 May 1929 in Ixelles, Brussels, Belgium, to an aristocratic family. She spent parts of her childhood in Belgium, England, and the Netherlands, and later studied ballet at the Arnhem Conservatory during World War II. After the war, she trained with Sonia Gaskell in Amsterdam and Marie Rambert in London, then began performing in West End musicals. Her film breakthrough came with Roman Holiday (1953), for which she became the first actress to win an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA for a single performance. That same year, she also won a Tony for Ondine. Over the next decade, she starred in Sabrina, Funny Face, The Nun's Story, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Charade, and My Fair Lady. In 1967, she earned award nominations for Wait Until Dark. After that, her film appearances became sporadic, including Robin and Marian with Sean Connery. Her last screen work was the documentary series Gardens of the World with Audrey Hepburn, for which she won a Primetime Emmy.

Hepburn was British, though she spent much of her early life in Europe. Standing 5'7" with a slim build and natural 30A bust, she fit the Hollywood ideal of her era. Her hair was brown, her eyes hazel, and her measurements were 31–20–33. She was active in film from 1948 to 1989, roughly 41 years. She won three BAFTAs for Best British Actress, and received a BAFTA Lifetime Achievement Award, a Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. She is one of only eighteen people to have won competitive Academy, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Awards. She also received a Special Tony and a Primetime Emmy for Gardens of the World.

Later in life, Hepburn devoted herself to UNICEF, which she had supported since 1954. From 1988 to 1992, she worked in poor communities in Africa, South America, and Asia. In December 1992, she received the US Presidential Medal of Freedom for her UNICEF work. She died a month later of appendiceal cancer at her home in Switzerland, at age 63. She left a legacy as both a film icon and a humanitarian.
