About Rogelia Cruz

Edited by the community

Rogelia Cruz Martínez was born on August 31, 1940, in Guatemala. In 1958, she won the Miss Guatemala title, a crowning achievement that launched her into the public eye. She later joined the Guatemalan Party of Labour, a left-wing political organization, and became romantically involved with its leader, Leonardo Castillo Johnson. Her activism and personal ties proved dangerous. She was kidnapped and murdered in January 1968, at age 27, because of her association with the party and Johnson. Her life was cut short, but her story remains a stark reminder of political repression. Cruz was Guatemalan and of Latin ethnicity, and she identified as straight. Though her careers as an activist and beauty pageant contestant were short, they placed her at the intersection of public glamour and underground political struggle. Her death marked a violent end to a life that had once been celebrated on stage and pageant circuits.
