Biography

About Annie Belle (actress)

Edited by the community

Annie Belle was a French actress and activist. She was born in Paris, France, on December 10, 1956, into a family of engineers. Her acting career began in 1974 when she appeared in the Jean Rollin film Tout le Monde il en a Deux (Bacchanales Sexuelles) before she turned 18. She went on to study at the Rue Blanche acting school in Paris under master Virilo. Belle worked primarily in French and Italian cinema during the 1970s and 1980s, collaborating with directors such as Jean Rollin, Ruggero Deodato, and Joe D'Amato.

Belle moved to Italy in 1975 and quickly became one of the most in-demand actresses in Italian exploitation cinema. In 1976 alone, she starred in three major films: Forever Emmanuelle, Blue Belle, and Velluto Nero. Blue Belle was a key point in her career and included a co-writing credit; she called its director, Massimo Dallamano, "a great professional and a talented man." She remembered Forever Emmanuelle as "not very good." In the early 1980s, she appeared in The House on the Edge of the Park, which she described as "cruel" but also "interesting," plus two Joe D'Amato films, Absurd and L'alcova.

Belle's personal problems slowed her career in the mid-1980s. She retired after her final film, Fuga dalla morte, in 1989. Returning to France, she earned a degree in psychology and worked as a social worker for people with mental illness. Belle had a three-year relationship with actor Al Cliver, from 1975 to 1978, during which they appeared in four films together. They later acted together occasionally, including in L'alcova. She died on January 27, 2024, at age 67.
