Biography
About Princess Caroline of Monaco
Caroline Louise Marguerite was born on 23 January 1957 in the Prince's Palace, Monaco, the eldest child of Rainier III and former American actress Grace Kelly. She was heiress presumptive from her birth until her brother Albert was born in 1958, and again from Albert's accession in 2005 until the birth of his twins in 2014. As a member of the House of Grimaldi, she is also a legitimate patrilineal descendant of the Dukes of Polignac, linking her to French nobility. Through her mother, she has Irish and German ancestry.
Caroline spent childhood summers at her maternal grandparents' home in Philadelphia and attended Camp Oneka in the Poconos at age 14, where she was discreetly protected by the U.S. Secret Service. Her mother described her and sister Stéphanie as "warm, bright, amusing" and capable girls, good at skiing, swimming, and riding. Educated at St Mary's School Ascot, she earned a French baccalauréat with honours in 1974, studied at Sciences Po, and later received a diploma in philosophy from the Sorbonne, with minors in psychology and biology. She speaks French, English, Spanish, German, and Italian.
Caroline's philanthropic work began in 1979 as president of the Monégasque Committee for the International Year of the Child. In 1981, she founded Jeune J'écoute, a youth hotline providing telephone support for young people. Over the years, she has been involved with AMADE Mondiale, the Princess Grace Foundation, the Prince Pierre Foundation, and UNICEF, which honored her with a Children's Champion Award in 2006. She also serves as patron of the Peter Le Marchant Trust and the International School of Paris, and founded Les Ballets de Monte Carlo.
Following her mother's death in 1982, Caroline acted as de facto first lady of Monaco until her brother's marriage in 2011. She was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 2003. Her personal interests include horseback riding, swimming, and skiing, and she has been recognized as an international fashion icon. A 2011 exhibition at the National Museum of Monaco honored her life and work.
