About Minta Durfee

Edited by the community

Minta Durfee, born Araminta Durfee in Los Angeles on October 1, 1889, is remembered as a pioneering silent screen comedienne whose career spanned over five decades. She began as a chorus girl in musical revues in 1908 and married comedian Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle that same year. In 1914, both entered the fledgling film industry with Mack Sennett and were soon paired as a comedy double. Charles Chaplin, newly arrived from England, was deemed 'very peculiar' by Sennett, who paired Minta with him as his leading lady in Making a Living (1914) to balance his eccentricities with her reputation for getting along with everyone.

Throughout her Keystone years, Minta co-starred in the classic madcap farce Tillie's Punctured Romance (1914) and appeared opposite Chester Conklin, Mack Swain, and Ford Sterling in a series of outrageous daredevil comedies. A popular story holds that director Wilfred Lucas bribed her with a pet dog to hang suspended from a bridge held only by a piano wire in Love, Speed and Thrills (1915). Minta and Arbuckle separated in 1921, just before the scandal over the death of Virginia Rappe that destroyed his career. Though divorced in 1925, she remained his staunchest defender through three trials and for the rest of her life.

In later years, Minta gave candid interviews, reminiscing about the silent comedy heyday. She described many fellow players at Sennett, including her husband and Mabel Normand, as extremely 'shy' off the job, and made blunt, sometimes unflattering revelations about Chaplin's personal hygiene. She continued making sporadic cameos and walk-ons until the early 70s. She died in September 1975 at the Motion Picture Country Home of a heart ailment. She was 85. Her height was 5'0", her hair black, and her eyes brown, a petite, slim figure with natural breasts. She was American, Caucasian, and straight.
