Biography

About Mikaela Shiffrin

Edited by the community

Mikaela Shiffrin is the most decorated American alpine skier in history. Born in Vail, Colorado, she grew up in a family of ski racers. Her parents, Eileen and Jeff, both competed, and her brother Taylor raced for the University of Denver. When she was eight, the family moved to rural New Hampshire, where her father worked as an anesthesiologist. She later attended Burke Mountain Academy, a ski academy in Vermont.

Shiffrin's rise was rapid. At 14, she won both slalom and giant slalom at the Topolino Games in Italy. In December 2010, at age 15, she claimed her first Nor-Am Cup win in super combined. She took the slalom bronze at the 2011 Junior World Championships. Her breakthrough came at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where she became the youngest slalom champion in history. Four years later, she added Olympic gold in giant slalom and silver in combined. She also won five World Championship golds, including a record six straight World Championship golds from 2019 to 2023.

Her World Cup record is unmatched. She has won 87 World Cup races, the most ever by any alpine skier, surpassing Ingemar Stenmark. This includes 53 slalom wins, the most in any discipline, and 21 giant slalom wins, the most by a female. She is the only athlete, male or female, to have won 15 races in a single calendar year (2018) and 17 in a season (2019). She has also won at least one race in all six World Cup disciplines, a feat no other skier has achieved. Shiffrin has been in a relationship with fellow skier Aleksander Aamodt Kilde since 2021.
