About Marketa Vondrousova
Marketa Vondrousova, a Czech tennis player, became the first unseeded woman to win the Wimbledon singles title in 2023. Born on 28 June 1999 in Sokolov, Karlovy Vary Region, she turned professional in 2014. Vondrousova reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 6 and has won two WTA Tour singles titles from six finals, along with a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Her breakthrough came early. In 2017, at age 17, she won the Ladies Open Biel Bienne in just her second career WTA Tour singles event, soon breaking into the top 100 before turning 18. She also reached the final of the 2019 French Open, becoming the first teenage Major finalist in nearly a decade. Injuries disrupted her progress, notably causing her to miss the second half of the 2019 season.
Vondrousova is known for her signature drop shot and is one of the best returners on the tour. In 2019, she led the WTA in percentage of return games won and return points won among players with at least ten matches. She stands 5'8" with an athletic build, brown hair, and brown eyes.
