Marling first gained attention as a member of the indie folk band Noah and the Whale, but she left that group to launch a solo career. Away from music, Marling completed a master's degree in psychoanalysis in 2024 and is a full-time stay-at-home mother. In a 2024 interview with The Times, she described the five-album record deal she signed as a teenager as "dreadful," noting that neither she nor her daughter own the rights to her first five albums, which she called "devastating."
