About Kesha
Musician and influencer Kesha has spent more than two decades turning pop culture on its head. She was born in Los Angeles, California, on March 1, 1987, and signed her first record deal with Kemosabe Records at 18 in 2005. Her breakthrough came in early 2009, when she was featured on Flo Rida's number-one single "Right Round." That same year, her own single "Tik Tok" became the best-selling digital single in history, moving over 14 million units internationally until it was surpassed in 2011.
Kesha has earned two number-one albums on the US Billboard 200: Animal (2010) and Rainbow (2017). She has also charted ten top-ten singles on the Hot 100, including "Your Love Is My Drug," "We R Who We R," "Die Young," and "Timber" with Pitbull. Her later albums Warrior (2012), High Road (2020), and Gag Order (2023) reached the top ten, with the last released in May 2023. By 2013, she had sold over 33 million combined tracks and ringtones in the US alone and over 55 million worldwide. She also co-wrote "Till the World Ends" for Britney Spears and has written for Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, and Miranda Cosgrove.
A long-running legal battle with producer Dr. Luke began in 2014 and paused her career between Warrior and Rainbow. The dispute, known as Kesha v. Dr. Luke, involved her accusations of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and employment discrimination, as well as his counterclaims of breach of contract and defamation. The case was settled out of court in June 2023. Away from music, Kesha is a vegetarian and a member of the LGBT community. She has previously identified as bisexual but in 2022 she said, "I'm not gay. I'm not straight. I don't know what I am. I love people... I refuse to be anything, really, except for open to it all." She has performed legal commitment ceremonies for same-sex and opposite-sex couples and has been involved in LGBT and animal rights activism. She also revealed that she was born with a quarter-inch vestigial tail, which was removed at birth. She remains active as an influencer, with 3.7 million followers on Instagram, and continues to produce music, posting since 2005 with 21 years active.
