Biography
About Kelly Van Der Veer
Kelly Van Der Veer was born on May 6, 1980, in the Netherlands and is a Dutch transgender woman. She is 46 years old, stands 186 centimeters tall, and has blonde hair and hazel eyes. Her career began early as a child performer, when she sang on albums 12 through 15 of the Dutch children's choir Kinderen voor Kinderen. Before her transition, as a teenager, she won the 'De Travestiet Show' competition in 1997, being the youngest participant. She has often said that her formative years were the most difficult part of her life, as she was frequently mistaken for a girl and faced ridicule, which drove her to seek prominence as a media personality.
Kelly gained celebrity status through reality television. She was a finalist in the 2002 edition of Dutch Big Brother and one of the favorites to win, but she also sparked controversy when she had sex with a fellow participant who was unaware she was transgender. At the end of that season, she performed her single 'I'm What I Am,' which was released in January 2002 as her first CD. The release received a lukewarm response and below average sales. In 2004, she made a brief cameo appearance as an unnamed lesbian in the Dutch movie Gay, which was not commercially successful. Along with fellow contestant Andries de Jong, she co-wrote the autobiographical book Kelly, published in Dutch in 2006.
Besides her Big Brother appearances, Kelly has been part of other television projects, including the spin-off show Hotel Big Brother. She currently performs a comedy item called 'Just Kel' on the Dutch talk show Jensen. In 2008, it was announced that she would enter the Australian Big Brother house as a special guest. Kelly now splits her time between the Netherlands, where she resides in Hilversum, and part-time residence in Florida, with plans to gain a foothold in America. She is a musician.
