Biography

About Jane Leeves

Edited by the community

With her tall, slim frame, brown hair, and brown eyes, Jane Leeves carries a classic British elegance that has served her well across decades of television. Born on Tuesday, 18th of April 1961 in Ilford, Essex, England, she holds dual citizenship, British and American. Her breakthrough came as one of Hill's Angels on The Benny Hill Show, and she later used her dancing background in a scene for Monty Python's The Meaning of Life and appeared as a tourist with a baby in David Lee Roth's "California Girls" music video.

Leeves gained recognition for her recurring role as Audrey, the smart but awkward girlfriend of Miles Silverberg, on Murphy Brown. She also played Marla the Virgin in four risqué episodes of Seinfeld, and appeared in the pilot for the US version of Red Dwarf. Her film credits include To Live and Die in L.A. (1985), where she played a lesbian avant-garde dancer, and she lent her voice to James and the Giant Peach (1996) as Mrs. Ladybug.

In 1993, Leeves joined Frasier as the eccentric and allegedly psychic Mancunian Daphne Moon. Her pregnancy was written into the show as weight gain due to stress. The role earned her Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, and she became the highest-paid British actress in Hollywood. After Frasier, she starred in Hot in Cleveland, a role that brought a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, and later played a surgeon on The Resident. She also voiced Lulu in The Penguins of Madagascar, and co-founded the production company Bristol Cities with Peri Gilpin.
