Biography
About Helen Walker
On New Year's Eve of 1946, Helen Walker picked up three hitchhiking World War II veterans while driving from Palm Springs to Los Angeles. The car hit a divider and flipped several times. One veteran died, two were badly hurt, and Walker herself suffered a broken pelvis. The survivors accused her of drunk driving and speeding. She went to trial, and although acquitted, the public turned against her and major studios stopped hiring her.
Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on July 17, 1920, Helen was a former actress of American nationality. She began her career on Broadway and was signed to films after a standout performance in the play 'Jason' in 1942. Her film debut, Lucky Jordan, earned her star billing. She went on to appear in The Man in Half Moon Street, Brewster's Millions, and the murder spoof Murder, He Says, and won a leading role in Heaven Only Knows. But the 1946 accident changed everything. After the trial, she took roles as ruthless women in dark mysteries like Nightmare Alley and Call Northside 777, and in Impact, a film that featured a fatal car accident. Yet the stigma never left her, and by the 1950s she worked in low-budget films, ending with a minor role in The Big Combo in 1955.
She made her last television appearance in 1960, the year her house burned down. Friends in show business helped her, and a benefit was staged. Her final years were marked by health problems. She died of cancer on March 10, 1968, at age 47. She was married twice: to Robert F. Blumofe from 1942 to 1946, and to Edward Nicholas du Domaine from 1950 to 1952. Both marriages ended in divorce.
