Biography
About Alison Hinds
Alison Hinds, the Bajan soca artist widely hailed as the undisputed Queen of Soca, has shaped the genre for four decades. Born in London, England, on 1 June 1970, she moved to Barbados at age eleven after her parents separated, and has called the island home ever since. Her journey began in 1986 when she joined the band Square One, starting with small gigs in bars and clubs before rising to regional fame. In 1996, her hit "Ragamuffin" won the Road March at Barbados' Crop Over Festival, and the following year she repeated the feat with "Twister," also taking the Party Monarch title. She was the first woman in Barbados to win these honours, a milestone that cemented her trailblazing status.
Square One's album "Full Bloom" swept the Caribbean, propelled by the song "Faluma," which topped charts in Guatemala for 49 weeks. The band continued producing hits until its breakup in 2004, partly due to Hinds' departure. Returning to the scene in 2005, she formed her own band, The Alison Hinds Show, and released the empowering anthem "Roll It Gyal," a collaboration with Machel Montano on the remix. Her album "Soca Queen" followed on 22 October 2007. Now 56, she lives in Barbados with her husband Edward Walcott and daughter Saharan, on a horse farm her husband manages. Her music undeniably crosses borders, a testament to her global appeal. Short sentences punctuate her story. Her hit "Love Affair" adds another layer. With over 287k Instagram followers, she remains a defining voice in soca.
