Biography
About Veronica Yip
Veronica Yip Yuk Hing, born in Macau on July 25, 1966, is a former actress and musician who became one of Hong Kong cinema's most talked-about stars of the 1990s. She started in the 1985 Miss Asia Pageant, finishing as second runner-up, and quickly moved into acting. Her breakthrough came with a bold leap: starring in three Category III films, Take Me (1991), Pretty Woman (1992), and Hidden Desire (1992), which were commercial hits and broke taboos for mainstream actresses. She also delivered acclaimed performances in The Eagle Shooting Heroes (1993) and Red Rose, White Rose (1994), showing range beyond erotic roles. Her transition from adult films to mainstream success opened doors for actresses like Shu Qi and Pauline Chan.
Yip didn't stop at acting. Between 1992 and 1995, she released seven Cantopop and Mandopop albums under Fitto Entertainment, a company owned by her brother Yip Chi-Ming, which later became Emperor Entertainment Group. She won three Best New Artist gold awards in 1992 from the Ultimate Song Chart Awards, RTHK Top 10 Gold Songs Awards, and Jade Solid Gold Best Ten Music Awards. In 1998, she invested heavily in her brother's Hong Kong Disneyland project, which was scrapped, causing a rift that later healed. That same year, at a concert in Atlantic City, she met Chinese-American businessman Jeffrey Wu. They married in 1996, and Yip retired from entertainment, moving to the United States. The couple has a daughter and two sons, and they live on Long Island. Wu runs the Hong Kong Supermarket chain and they have investments in United International Bank, a jet trading company, and commercial real estate. In 2020, financial troubles hit: Wu filed for bankruptcy with debts reported up to US$50 million. That November, Yip publicly supported Donald Trump's re-election, identifying as a Republican. She remains a figure whose career reshaped Hong Kong cinema's boundaries.
In 2013, she made a film comeback with I Love Hong Kong 2013, decades after her last major roles in the 1990s. Black-haired and brown-eyed, she stands at 5'5" with a slim build and enhanced C-cup breasts. Her career spanned 28 years, from 1985 to 2013, and she appeared in over 30 films, including Gigolo and Whore II, Call Girl '92, and Chronicle of the Phoenix. Early in her career, she was known for taking risks, but she also balanced that with musical talent and business acumen. Today, her legacy is complex: a pageant queen who embraced adult films, then outgrew them, and who used her fame to build a life across two continents. Her story has had ups and downs, but her influence on Hong Kong entertainment remains clear.
