Biography
About Vera Reynolds
Vera Reynolds was an American film actress whose career began when she was just 12 years old. She started as a dancer and went on to become one of the Sennett Bathing Beauties before emerging as a leading lady in silent motion pictures. Her film credits include starring roles in Sam Wood's Prodigal Daughters (1923) and Cecil B. DeMille's Feet of Clay (1924), The Golden Bed (1925), The Road to Yesterday (1925), and Dragnet Patrol (1931) with George "Gabby" Hayes.
In 1927, Reynolds made national headlines when police in Hollywood reported that she had attempted suicide. She was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but she, her mother, and her doctor insisted that her illness was caused by food poisoning and denied any suicide attempt. Reynolds married twice. Her first marriage was to comedian Earl Montgomery, which ended in divorce in 1926. She then reportedly married Robert Ellis du Reel, though their relationship was complicated. In March 1938, she brought a breach of promise suit against Reel, seeking $150,000 and claiming that she had lived with him for nine years before learning that they were not legally married. She contended that a marriage ceremony took place in Greenwich, Connecticut, in 1926, but Reel denied that a wedding ever occurred. During the trial, director Robert G. Vignola attempted to reconcile the pair out of court, but the suit continued.
Reynolds passed away on April 22, 1962, at the Motion Picture Country Hospital in Woodland Hills, California, at the age of 62. She was buried in Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood. Her early start and work in both silent and sound films left a lasting mark on early Hollywood.
