About Torres (Singer)

Edited by the community

Torres, born Mackenzie Scott on January 23, 1991, in Orlando, Florida, is an American indie rock singer-songwriter. Adopted at birth by her birth mother's bible study teacher, she grew up in Macon, Georgia, as the youngest of three children. Her early life was steeped in music and faith, learning flute and piano and singing in the Baptist church choir. A fascination with The Phantom of the Opera sparked an interest in musical theatre, leading to school productions and eventually guitar, which she played at a nursing home.

In July 2012, while still a student, Scott recorded her debut album Torres over five days at Tony Joe White's home studio in Franklin, Tennessee. The album was released in January 2013 and gained critical acclaim, and she performed her debut show as Torres at The Basement in Nashville. In 2017, she met painter Jenna Gribbon at a bar in the East Village, and by 2019 they shared a live-work space in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Scott says she dreamed of meeting Gribbon before it happened. Gribbon proposed in October 2020, and they married in November 2022. On May 1, 2021, Scott came out as non-binary.
