Tiziana Cantone

In 2015, Tiziana sent amateur videos of herself engaging in consensual sex acts to several people, including an ex-boyfriend, reportedly to make him jealous. The ex-boyfriend uploaded the videos online without her consent, and they spread rapidly. The videos went viral, leading to widespread mockery, memes, and cyberbullying. One phrase she uttered in the video, "Stai girando? Bravo!" ("Are you filming? Good!"), became a popular internet meme, further humiliating her. The harassment cost her job and caused severe emotional distress. She fought legally for years to have the videos removed, facing a court order to pay €20,000 in legal costs shortly before her death. She changed her name and moved, but the trauma persisted.

Tragically, Tiziana died on September 13, 2016, at the age of 33, in Mugnano di Napoli at her aunt's home. The initial ruling was suicide by hanging, and she had attempted suicide twice before. Her mother attributed her death to relentless online humiliation, the failure to achieve full justice, depression, and panic attacks. The case sparked national outrage in Italy, prompting debates on revenge porn, cyberbullying, and the "right to be forgotten." In 2021, prosecutors reopened the case, exhumed her body, and investigated possible murder due to new DNA evidence, but the official ruling remains suicide. Tiziana Cantone's story is a stark reminder of the devastating real-world consequences of non-consensual image sharing.
