Tessa Thompson is an American actress, musician, producer, writer, and influencer known for her versatility across film, television, and music. She was born on October 3, 1983, in Los Angeles, California, to a family with deep roots in the arts: her father, Marc Anthony Thompson, is a singer-songwriter, and her grandfather, Bobby Ramos, was an actor-musician. She was raised in Los Angeles before moving to Brooklyn, New York. Her heritage is mixed-race, with Afro-Panamanian, Mexican, and British Isles ancestry. Thompson attended Santa Monica High School, where she appeared in numerous theatre productions, and later studied cultural anthropology at Santa Monica College.
Thompson began her professional acting career in 2002, making her television debut in 2005 on the CBS series Cold Case. Her stage credits include playing Juliet in a production of Romeo and Juliet at the Boston Court Theatre in Pasadena, which earned her an NAACP Theatre nomination. Her film career features a string of notable roles, including Selma (2014), the Creed series, Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Sorry to Bother You (2018), Annihilation (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Men in Black: International (2019), and Lady and the Tramp (2019). She also works as a musician, producing songs as part of an Electro Band, including one used in her film Dear White People.
