Born Theresa Elizabeth Polo on June 1, 1969, in Dover, Delaware, United States, she grew up in a household where her father designed stereo systems and her mother was a homemaker. At age five, she began ballet training and continued for 13 years, even attending the School of American Ballet in New York. Her path shifted when she won a modeling contest, which led her to move to New York City at 17 to pursue acting.
Her professional acting career started in 1986, and she made her television debut in the drama series 'TV 101' in 1988. She gained recognition through roles in the miniseries 'The Phantom of the Opera' and as a regular on the final season of 'Northern Exposure.' In the 1990s, she appeared in shows like 'Chicago Hope' and played Detective Ash in 'Brimstone.' A major breakthrough came with the 'Meet the Parents' trilogy, where she played Pam Byrnes-Focker alongside Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro. In 2006, she met drummer Jamie Wollam, and they had a daughter, Bailey, but the relationship ended in 2012.
