Teri Garr was a versatile American actress whose career spanned nearly five decades, from 1963 to 2011. She was born on December 11, 1944, in Lakewood, Ohio, and died on October 29, 2024, at the age of 79. Garr's entry into show business was almost inherited: her father, Eddie Garr, was a Broadway and film actor, and her mother, Phyllis, was a dancer. After her father's death when she was 11, the family moved to Hollywood, where her mother worked as a wardrobe mistress. Garr's early career included dancing in five Elvis Presley movies, and her first speaking role came in the 1968 Monkees film Head. She became a familiar face on television in the 1970s, appearing in shows like Star Trek and McCloud, and as Cher's friend Olivia on The Sonny and Cher Show. Her film career flourished with memorable roles in Young Frankenstein, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Mr. Mom. She earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Tootsie in 1982. She was 5'7" with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a slim build. Her work remains well known to audiences today. Garr's talent for comedy and drama made her a sought-after performer. She is remembered as one of Hollywood's most recognizable actresses of her era.
