Biography
About Tanji Johnson
Standing at 5'3" with an athletic build, Tanji Johnson pairs a compact frame with a career defined by discipline. Born in Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany, she grew up as a military brat before attending the United States Air Force Academy, graduating in 1997. She was commissioned as an Air Force officer, and her early years blended service with fitness competition. She appeared in her first contest in 1998, taking a year off when assigned during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. Her active years spanned 1998 to 2016, a run of 18 years that saw her rise to prominence as a professional fitness competitor.
As an American of primarily Asian descent, Johnson claimed a defining victory in 2013, winning the Fitness International title at the Arnold Sports Festival. This win capped a competitive period that also included a role on the 2008 revival of American Gladiators, where she competed as Stealth. Her background is not purely athletic, however. The former military personnel member now works as a personal trainer and coaches physique competitors, while also promoting for the National Physique Committee. She co-promotes the Vancouver Natural Bodybuilding and Tanji Johnson Fitness/Figure Classic, events covering the Pacific Northwest.
Johnson currently resides in Renton, Washington. She identifies as a "Muscular Christian," a faith-based approach that intertwines with her fitness philosophy. Her younger sister, Safiya, is also an IFBB pro bikini competitor, making fitness a family affair. Johnson's career is a blend of service, sport, and coaching, with a legacy that includes both competitive titles and a dedication to developing new athletes.
