About Stephanie Salas
Stephanie Salas Banquells was born into one of Mexico's most famous show business families. Her mother is actress Silvia Pasquel, and her father is musician Micky Salas; her grandparents are the legendary actress Silvia Pinal and actor Rafael Banquells. Her aunts include singers Alejandra Guzmán and Rocío Banquells. She has two daughters: Michelle Salas, born in June 1989 with her then-boyfriend Luis Miguel, and Camila Valero, born in 1997 with her partner Pablo Valero, a former member of Santa Sabina.
Salas made her show business debut singing at age eight on the program Noche a noche, hosted by Verónica Castro, alongside her mother. She later joined the cast of Vaselina, the Spanish-language stage production of Grease, alongside Timbiriche. At age 16, producer Ernesto Alonso asked her to join the telenovela El precio de la fama. In 1992, she starred in the popular telenovela Baila Conmigo, singing several songs, including the hit "Tonterias." That same year, she signed with the Televisa-owned label Melody.
Her debut album, Ave María, was released in 1992. The title track, written by Lolita De La Colina, became a huge hit in Mexico and parts of Latin America, and the album achieved gold status. Her follow-up, La raza humana, came in 1994. It received critical praise and won the Palmas de oro award from Mexican music critics, though it was less commercially successful. Notable tracks include "Corazón," which experimented with house music, and "Nube," inspired by Kurt Cobain's death. The album featured many collaborations with Pablo Valero.
After the mid-90s, Salas stepped back from music to raise her daughters. She continued acting, leaving Televisa briefly to appear in telenovelas for TV Azteca, including El candidato and Agua y aceite. She also joined the Spanish-language version of Eve Ensler's Vagina Monologues, which has toured Mexico and been performed over 3,500 times. Her other theater work includes Mame, Mi vida es mi vida, and El protagonista. In late 2006, she returned to music with the project Tuna, formed with musician Pepe Acosta, releasing a self-titled debut on MW Records.
