About Sonya Balmores
American actress, model, and former surfer Sonya Balmores was born in Kalaheo, Kauai, Hawaii. She grew up on the Garden Isle, surfing and modeling, with a Filipino father and a mother of Irish and Native American descent. In 2004, she won the Miss Hawaii Teen USA title and placed first runner-up nationally. Her early work included print campaigns for Roxy, Rip Curl, Billabong, Hurley, and Nike, as well as magazine covers for Women's Health, Shape, Foam, and Outside. She started her career in 2003 and has been active for over two decades.
Balmores transitioned to acting with a series regular role on Nickelodeon's teen surf drama Beyond the Break, filmed in Oahu. She completed three seasons before making her feature film debut in Soul Surfer as Malina Birch, the antagonist to Anna Sophia Robb's Bethany Hamilton, alongside Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid. Her later credits include a guest role on HBO's Ballers with Dwayne Johnson, a major arc on Marvel's Inhumans as Auran, and a supporting part in Den of Thieves. She also voiced Alani Kelso in Tom Clancy's The Division 2, with over five years of experience in video game motion capture and voice work.
In 2021, she had a recurring role in the Amazon reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer. She stars in the 2022 film Moonrise and completed work on the third season of The Chosen. Balmores trains in Los Angeles, having studied at The Groundlings, The Actors Gang, Identity School of Acting, and with Juilliard alum Diane Venora. She is a graduate of The Baron Brown Acting Studio, a two-year Meisner program in Santa Monica. She stands 5'4" with brown hair and eyes, and a slim, petite build. Her measurements are 32–24–34, with a 32B bra cup.
