Biography
About Simone Biles
Simone Arianne Biles (/sɪˈmoʊn ˈbaɪəlz/; born March 14, 1997) is an American artistic gymnast, widely considered the greatest female gymnast of all time. Her seven Olympic medals tie with Shannon Miller for the most by an American gymnast. With 25 World Championship medals, she is the most decorated gymnast in history. In 2022, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Joe Biden. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Biles won gold in the all-around, vault, and floor, bronze on balance beam, and gold with the "Final Five" team. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she withdrew from most events due to "the twisties," a temporary loss of air awareness, yet still earned a silver with the team and a bronze on balance beam. Her focus on safety and mental health was widely praised.
Biles boasts a remarkable competitive record: five-time World all-around champion (2013–2015, 2018–2019), five-time World floor champion (2013–2015, 2018–2019), three-time World balance beam champion (2014–2015, 2019), two-time World vault champion (2018–2019), and seven-time U.S. national all-around champion (2013–2016, 2018–2019, 2021). She has also won World silver on vault (2013, 2014) and uneven bars (2018), and bronze on vault (2015) and balance beam (2013, 2018). Her 25 World medals and 19 World golds are records, surpassing Vitaly Scherbo's previous mark of 23. She is the sixth woman to win individual all-around titles at both Worlds and the Olympics, and the first since Lilia Podkopayeva (1996) to hold both simultaneously. She is the first American female gymnast to win a World medal on every event.
