Shelley Alexis Duvall, born in Fort Worth, Texas on July 7, 1949, was an American actress and producer. She began her career in 1970, discovered by director Robert Altman, who cast her in Brewster McCloud. Though she was hesitant to become an actress, she continued collaborating with Altman in films like McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Thieves Like Us, Nashville, and 3 Women, the last earning her the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress. In 1980, she played Wendy Torrance in The Shining and Olive Oyl in Popeye, roles that made her a household name. She also appeared in Time Bandits, Frankenweenie, and Roxanne, before producing children's programs such as Faerie Tale Theatre and Shelley Duvall's Bedtime Stories.

After the 1990s, she acted sporadically, with roles in The Underneath and The Portrait of a Lady, and returned for her final film, The Forest Hills, in 2023. She was of English, French Huguenot, German, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh descent. Her later life attracted media attention concerning her mental health. Duvall died of diabetes complications on July 11, 2024, at age 75. Standing 5'8" with a slim build, she had brown hair and brown eyes, and her natural bust size was 34B. She worked in the industry for 54 years, and four of her films are preserved in the National Film Registry.
