About Shannon Szabados
Shannon Szabados, a tall, athletic figure at 5'9" with a commanding presence in the crease, is a retired Canadian hockey goaltender who spent two decades at the top of the game. Her career, spanning 2000 to 2020, was defined by a long list of firsts for female players in men's leagues. She broke barriers in the Western Hockey League, the Alberta Junior Hockey League, and the Southern Professional Hockey League, where she became the first woman to both sign and play. In her first AJHL game, she earned a shutout, and after the 2006–07 season, she was named the league's Top Goaltender.
Internationally, Szabados was a cornerstone for Team Canada, playing in three Olympic Winter Games (2010, 2014, and 2018). She was in net for Canada's gold medal victories over the United States in both 2010 and 2014, and after the 2010 tournament, she received the Top Goaltender award and a spot on the Tournament All-Star Team. Her professional career also included a memorable stint with the PWHPA, where she continued to compete at the highest level.
Off the ice, Szabados was a pioneer. In 2014, she made 34 saves to become the first female goaltender to win a men's professional league game, an overtime victory for the Cottonmouths against the Fayetteville FireAntz. That same year, she signed a professional contract, and just over a year later, she achieved another milestone: recording a shutout in a men's professional league, stopping 33 shots in a 3–0 win over the Huntsville Havoc. Her path to excellence included playing for MacEwan University and NAIT, where she was a rare female player on men's college teams. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, she remains a Canadian sports icon, respected for her skill and fearless approach to the game. Her influence extends beyond the rink, proving that talent knows no gender.
