About Seiko Matsuda

Edited by the community

Seiko Matsuda, born Noriko Kamachi on March 10, 1962, in Kurume, Fukuoka, Japan, is a Japanese singer-songwriter who became one of the most popular idols of the 1980s. She has been active since 1979, starting her career at around 18 years old, and has continued releasing music for over four decades. Her long and successful career has earned her the nickname the "Eternal Idol" from the Japanese media. In 2011, Music Station listed her as the second best-selling idol of all time in Japan, with over 29.5 million records sold, trailing only SMAP and ahead of her 1980s rival Akina Nakamori. She also held the record for the most number-one hits from 1983 to 2000, a record later broken by B'z, and the record for the most number-one hits by a solo artist, which Ayumi Hamasaki broke in 2006.

Beyond her music, Matsuda has also worked as an actress and businesswoman. She has performed at the prestigious NHK New Year's Eve show Kohaku a total of 24 times, including as the finale performer in 2014 and 2015. She continues to release new singles and albums, tour every summer, and appear in commercials and television shows. Even in 2016, some critics compared her output unfavorably to contemporary artists, but her legacy as an idol remains strong. Standing at 5'3" with an average build, she has brown hair and brown eyes. Her measurements are 32–23–33, and she wears a 32B bra size. She is straight and of Japanese and Asian ethnicity.
