Edited by the community

Sam Taylor-Johnson, born Samantha Louise Taylor-Wood on March 4, 1967, in London, is a British director who first made her mark in the art world before turning to film. She came to prominence as one of the Young British Artists, exhibiting fine-art photography and multi-screen video works in the 1990s. Her 1998 Turner Prize nomination and 1997 Venice Biennale Illy Café Prize for Most Promising Young Artist established her as a significant figure in contemporary art. In 2000, she created a photomural around the scaffolding of Selfridges department store in London, featuring 21 cultural icons, and in 2001 she photographed the cover of Elton John's album Songs From the West Coast. She is perhaps best known for her 'Crying Men' series, which captured Hollywood actors like Robin Williams and Sean Penn in tears.

Taylor-Johnson made her feature directorial debut in 2009 with Nowhere Boy, a biopic about John Lennon's childhood, which earned her a BAFTA nomination. She later directed the adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, though she has said she regrets taking on that project. In 2022, it was announced she would direct Back to Black, a biopic about Amy Winehouse. Her work spans music videos, like R.E.M.'s "Überlin," and short films, including Love You More, written by Patrick Marber. She has been a Governor of the British Film Institute since 2006.

In her personal life, Taylor-Johnson has survived cancer twice, battling colon cancer in 1997 and breast cancer in 2000. She practices yoga and Transcendental Meditation, which she credits with helping her cope. She was appointed OBE in the 2011 Birthday Honours. She married art dealer Jay Jopling in 1997, with whom she has two daughters; the couple separated in 2008. She then began a relationship with actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, whom she met during the casting of Nowhere Boy. They married in 2012 and have two daughters together, splitting time between Los Angeles and a farm in Somerset. She is 6'0" tall, has blonde hair and blue eyes, and a slim build with natural breasts. She has an Instagram following of 226k. She is straight.
