Biography

About Romy Schneider

Edited by the community

Romy Schneider was born on 23 September 1938 in Vienna, Austria, into a family of actors. Making her film debut at age 15, her breakthrough came two years later in the popular Sissi trilogy (1955). Her mother, who supervised her career, approved her participation in Christine (1958), a remake of Max Ophüls's Playing at Love. During the shoot she fell for co-star Alain Delon and moved with him to Paris, launching an international career with directors like Luchino Visconti and Orson Welles.

After Delon broke up with her in 1964, she married Harry Meyen. They had a son, David-Christopher, but the relationship was difficult and they divorced in 1975. She turned to alcohol and drugs, yet her cinematic work, especially in France, remained strong. She was the first actress to receive the new César Award for Best Actress for That Most Important Thing: Love (1975), and won again for A Simple Story (1978). Later she married her former secretary Daniel Biasini, with whom she had daughter Sarah Biasini. The hardest blow came in 1981 when her son died after being impaled on a fence. She never recovered and died on 29 May 1982 in Paris at age 43. Though suicide was suggested, the cause was declared cardiac arrest.

Schneider stands 5'4" with a slim build, brown hair, and blue eyes. She was 43 when she passed away.
