Biography

About Rita Hayworth

Edited by the community

With auburn hair, brown eyes, and a slim 5'6" frame, she was one of Hollywood's most recognizable leading ladies. Born Margarita Carmen Cansino in Brooklyn, New York, she rose to fame in the 1940s as a top star and former exotic dancer. She changed her name to Rita Hayworth and dyed her hair to dark red to broaden her range of roles.

Her appeal was so widespread that Life magazine featured her on its cover five times starting in 1940. She made 61 films over 37 years, and was the first dancer to appear as a partner to both Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. The American Film Institute lists her among the 100 Greatest Stars of All Time. She passed away on May 14, 1987, at age 68.
