Her first film role was in Paradise (1982), and later that year she starred in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, a performance that included what Rolling Stone called "the most memorable bikini-drop in cinema history." She went on to appear in a range of films, including Private School (1983), Gremlins (1984), and its sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch, as well as Drop Dead Fred (1991) and Princess Caraboo (1994).
Cates stepped away from acting in 2001, but returned in 2015 to voice her Gremlins character Kate Beringer for the video game Lego Dimensions. She has been married to actor Kevin Kline since 1989.
