American Petra Verkaik was born on November 4, 1966, in Los Angeles, California, to a Dutch father and an Indonesian mother. Raised as an only child, she spoke Dutch until third grade and grew up with a mixed-race background. She studied mechanical engineering at California State University, Northridge, and holds a degree in that field. Her entry into modeling came by chance in 1989 when she modeled for a photographer in exchange for free headshots; the photographer sent the images to Playboy, leading to her debut in the magazine's Great 35th Anniversary Playmate Hunt special edition in February 1989.
