About Pepi Lederer

Edited by the community

Pepi Lederer, born Josephine Rose Lederer on March 18, 1910, in the United States, was an American actress and writer. She had a slender build, though her exact measurements are not recorded. Her life ended tragically on June 11, 1935, at the age of 25.

Lederer was the niece of actress and philanthropist Marion Davies. She was a high-spirited young woman who identified as a lesbian and had relationships with actress Nina Mae McKinney. She became a well-known figure in the gay and bisexual community of Jazz Age Hollywood. Due to either her sexual orientation or a drug addiction, she was involuntarily committed to a psychiatric ward at the behest of Davies' partner, newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst.

On June 11, 1935, Lederer took her own life by jumping from a sixth-floor window at Good Samaritan Hospital. A later obituary printed by Hearst's flagship newspaper, The San Francisco Examiner, depicted her suicide as an accidental mishap, and her hospitalization was attributed to "a nervous breakdown caused by overstudy." She is buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles.
