Biography
About Peggie Castle
American actress Peggie Castle spent much of her career playing the "other woman" in B-movies, but she also found steady work on television. Born Peggy Blair on December 22, 1927, in Appalachia in Wise County in far southwestern Virginia, she was discovered by a talent scout while eating in a restaurant in Beverly Hills. That encounter led to a seven-year contract with Universal-International and her film debut in the 1947 picture When a Girl's Beautiful.
Castle built a busy filmography through the 1950s, appearing in Payment on Demand, Invasion U.S.A., 99 River Street, and Arrivederci Roma. In 1949, she was named "Miss Cheesecake" by the Southern California Restaurant Association, and later that year the Junior Chamber of Commerce dubbed her "Miss Three Alarm." She also worked under the billing names Peggy Castle and Peggie Call.
By mid-decade, Castle had moved into television, landing guest roles on Fireside Theater, Cheyenne, The Restless Gun, and Perry Mason. Her most prominent small-screen part came from 1959 to 1962, when she co-starred in the western series Lawman. Her final onscreen appearance was a 1966 guest spot on The Virginian.
Castle married four times. Her first husband was Revis Call, whom she wed in 1945 and divorced in 1950. A second marriage to Universal publicist Robert H. Rains ended in 1954. In 1955 she married producer/director William McGarry; they had a daughter, Erin, before divorcing in 1969. Her last marriage was to Arthur Morganstern in 1971, and it lasted until his death in April 1973.
Alcoholism complicated her later years. On August 11, 1973, McGarry found her body on the couch of her Hollywood apartment. Her death was attributed to cirrhosis.
For her contributions to television, Castle has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6230 Hollywood Boulevard.
