About Peaches Browning
Average height and average build, with brown hair and brown eyes, Peaches Browning was an American actress born Frances Belle Heenan on June 23, 1910. Her life took a dramatic turn at age 15 when she married New York real estate developer Edward West "Daddy" Browning, who was 51. The couple met at a sorority dance in March 1926, and their whirlwind courtship was filled with expensive gifts and public appearances in his peacock blue Rolls-Royce. They wed on April 10, 1926, in Cold Spring, New York, with her parents' permission, partly to thwart a campaign against the relationship. Shortly before the wedding, Peaches was the victim of an acid attack by an unidentified perpetrator.
The marriage unraveled quickly, leading to a highly publicized trial in White Plains, New York. Peaches sought a legal separation, claiming cruelty, and testified about her husband's odd behavior, including keeping a goose in their bedroom. The judge ruled in Daddy's favor, granting him a separation without alimony. Peaches remained legally married until his death in 1934. The sensational coverage made her a tabloid staple, and their story influenced popular culture, including references in the 1927 Gershwin musical "Funny Face" and F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story "The Love Boat".
Her notoriety launched a vaudeville career, and she was managed by Marvin Welt, an early theatrical agent who took a percentage of ticket sales. She had three more marriages after Browning's death, all ending in divorce, and an affair with comedian Milton Berle. Peaches died on August 23, 1956, at New York Hospital in Manhattan at age 46, after slipping in her bathroom at home.
