About Paula Scanlan

Edited by the community

Paula Scanlan, 26, is a former collegiate swimmer and diver who competed for the University of Pennsylvania before becoming a prominent activist and political commentator. She is American, of Irish and Taiwanese descent, and was born in Greenwich, Connecticut. She stands 5'4" with an athletic build, and she has no tattoos or piercings.

Scanlan gained national attention when she and fellow swimmer Riley Gaines publicly opposed UPenn's decision to allow trans-identifying swimmer Lia Thomas to compete on the women's team and use the women's locker room. That controversy contributed to the indefinite suspension of federal funding for UPenn and the barring of Thomas from women's competitive swimming.

Today, Scanlan serves as a Stand with Women Spokeswoman and Advisor at Independent Women's Forum and Independent Women's Voice, and as New Jersey's Early Vote Action Coordinator. She has been active in public life since 2018.
