Before entering adult films, Nova had other aspirations. In an interview, she said her true desire was to become a singer in the retro soul tradition of Amy Winehouse. She had been working on an album with someone significant in the music industry, but she would not reveal who her collaborator was. She only began to consider porn modeling and films after she was approached by an agent in March 2017. She said she had never watched porn films before then.

Nova faced personal struggles throughout her life. She reportedly struggled with depression, which was worsened by a series of setbacks. In early 2017, she revealed on Twitter that her boyfriend had fatally overdosed on heroin, leading some fans to believe she thought he intentionally took his own life. That death came not long after a car crash that left her with serious facial injuries. In October 2017, a doctor told her she needed to get sober or her 'days were limited.' She went to a friend's house to stay sober for three days instead of seeking medical help, but she took to Twitter on Christmas Eve to express sadness about being alone for the holidays.

On January 7, 2018, police found her body at her home after a neighbor raised concerns. The neighbor had seen her acting strangely the day before. Investigators found she was suffering from an infection and had bruising on her legs. Prescription medications for a kidney infection and a urinary tract infection were found at the scene. The coroner initially believed sepsis from an infection caused her death, but a later autopsy determined she died from complications of alcohol abuse and recent cocaine use. She was 20 years old.
