About Oksana Shachko
Oksana Shachko, also spelled Oxana Shachko, was a Russian activist and artist, though she lived much of her later life in France. Born on January 31, 1987, in the Russian Federation, she is best known as a co-founder of the radical feminist protest group Femen in 2008, alongside Anna Hutsol and Alexandra Shevchenko. The group staged topless 'sextremist' actions against patriarchy, religion, dictatorships, and corruption.
Before her activism, Shachko had been a child prodigy icon painter for the Orthodox Church. That background gave her a unique artistic voice, and she later specialized in subversive religious icons. Around 2014, she distanced herself from Femen and focused on her art while living in exile in France. She was granted political asylum there. Her work as an artist became her primary focus during those years.
Shachko died on July 23, 2018, at age 31, in her apartment in Montrouge, a suburb south of Paris. French authorities and multiple reliable sources, including Wikipedia, The New York Times, Elle, The Paris Review, and Artforum, confirmed her death as a suicide by hanging. She had a prior suicide attempt, struggled with depression, refugee paperwork issues, and disillusionment. Friends reported she left a suicide note, and her body was discovered after concerns led to breaking into her apartment. No foul play was indicated, and the death was treated as suicide pending autopsy.
