Biography
About Oja Kodar
A slim build with brown hair and brown eyes, Oja Kodar is an 85-year-old Croatian actress and writer. Born in Zagreb, Croatia as Olga Palinkas, she began her career in 1961 and remained active until 2018, a span of 57 years. She is known for Jaded (1989), The Other Side of the Wind (2018), and The Deep (1970).
Her life and career are closely tied to Orson Welles. They met in Zagreb in 1962 while he was shooting The Trial. Welles reportedly wrote her a letter he never gave, keeping it in his pocket until they met again in 1966. Their relationship began immediately. Their first project together, The Deep, started filming in 1967 with Jeanne Moreau and Laurence Harvey, but was abandoned in 1969, left unfinished. Around 1969, Welles renamed her Oja Kodar, echoing Citizen Kane's Charles Foster Kane and Susan Alexander, and began building her up as a star; it didn't work. In 1970, an Italian newspaper exposed the affair, and Welles, angry, left Italy for America, abandoning his long-gestating Don Quixote.
Despite their partnership, she never became the fourth Mrs. Welles. After his death, the third Mrs. Welles, Paola Mori, died in a car accident on the way to settle the will. Oja then reached an agreement with Beatrice Welles. She also served as a jury member at the Venice Film Festival in 1991, a rare public role for her.
